Flood Insurance Uncertainty Looms for 180,000 Californians

A recent Los Angeles Times article highlights growing concerns over potential changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) under proposed reforms by the Trump administration. The NFIP currently supports approximately 180,000 property owners in California, particularly in flood-prone regions like the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, backing affordable flood insurance policies.

Dr. Nicholas Pinter, Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, emphasized the critical role that federal flood insurance plays in protecting vulnerable communities. Without NFIP support, he warns, many properties in low-lying areas could become uninsurable and unsellable, triggering far-reaching economic and social consequences.
